It's a love story marked by furniture. The Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona Chair is the first piece of furniture that I fell in love with in design school. In my first furniture history class I discovered there is a lot to learn about world history based on what kind of chairs the behinds of the influential sat in! The Barcelona Chair has a rich story and if you consider yourself a history buff, feel free to read on here. For me this chair represents the point in time where I fell in love with design and not coincidentally my architect, aka, my husband.
This classic side table designed by Architect, Eileen Gray in 1927 for her famous house in Cap Martin now sits in my living room. I have always loved this piece and about 4 years ago my husband surprised me with it for my birthday. It's sleek, clean and totally tough as nails! It was also designed by a female architect in a time when the only thing a woman was designing was a plan to escape!

Ah, the Eames Lounge Chair. It's like the holy grail for us. Designed by the husband and wife team, Charles and Ray Eames, this lounge chair is the epitome of modern design. In 1956 this lounge chair came on the scene and it's not going anywhere people. In my opinion, the sexiest rooms in the world hold this chair and is object of our affections! Someday, after the kids are grown and half-way trustworthy, we'll splurge and add this little piece of history to our own home.

love it, Amy! I'm off to polish up on my history of the Barcelona chair. What a treat that your husband gave you the side table, so sweet!
ReplyDeleteAm I gonna be in trouble if I admit that I have never been too crazy about the Eames chairs? But I adore that Barcelona. That is one sleek sitter.
ReplyDeleteI too fell in love with design when I came across the Barcelona! My future is a Featherston chair. My present is the Butterfly Chair - I was lucky enough to find two originals on ebay a while ago. Thanks for sharing. Michelle
ReplyDeleteI love these picks.
ReplyDeleteThe most amazing thing is that no matter how old they are all functional and ageless.
